Cozy Cabin Charm
Kitchen, Inver Grove Heights
When searching for their new home, the owners wanted the perfect house that was both close to the city and secluded. They found it in Inver Grove Heights on a river bluff, accessible only by a long, winding gravel road.
Surrounded by woods, the property was peaceful and remote. Inside, the home felt like a vacation retreat, with a wrap-around deck and floor-to-ceiling windows. However, the house needed some renovating and updating — particularly the kitchen and dining room.
The owners loved the home’s rustic finishes, especially the natural wood ceilings and exposed beams. Preserving its character was a priority. It was important that the new spaces blend with the rest of the home.
The new kitchen cabinets are a soft sage green, bringing in natural tones and brightening the room. Rich wood accents on the island, hood vent trim and shelves provide a striking contrast to the light cabinets and flooring.
The perimeter countertops are a soft cream quartz with subtle warm veining. Elegant brass hardware is an unexpected detail.
A glazed porcelain backsplash and decorative tile inlay behind the stove add visual interest while not competing with the kitchen’s other finishes and design elements.
The new center island was built taller than standard to better accommodate the owner’s passion for baking. The countertop is richly-veined quartzite in dramatic, earthy tones. Open shelving displays cookbooks and the vintage homey décor that the owners love.
A stand-out red range offers a bold and colorful contrast to the muted cabinetry.
A leaded glass transom window conceals storage.
In the adjoining dining room, outdated wood paneling was removed. Durable luxury vinyl flooring is perfect for the high-traffic area. Updated lighting introduces a pop of modern design, while still preserving the home’s rustic charm.
