Not-So-Empty Nest
Many empty nesters choose to downsize — their children move out, rooms are empty and a big house is no longer needed. They like the idea of a smaller, easier property to maintain as they get older.
The owners of this Minneapolis home took a different approach. When they bought their new home five years ago, they decided to “upsize” instead. They wanted a welcoming house with plenty of space to encourage visits from their children and grandchildren. The began to customize the home, from kitchen and lower level to the upstairs owners’ bath.
Owners’ Bath Remodel, Linden Hills
The existing owners’ bath had an inset built-in bathtub and separate walk-in shower. A large window above the tub offered no privacy. The linen cabinet was located within the tub space and was difficult to reach — the owners had to stand in the bathtub to access its contents.
To maximize space, the bathtub and shower locations were flipped. The old built-in tub was replaced with a large walk-in shower with marble-inspired porcelain tile. Glass blocks allow light flow while maintaining privacy. Grab bars were added for safety.
The old shower was replaced with a free-standing soaking tub with half wall ledge and heated towel rack.
The flooring is slate gray tile with a custom marble mosaic accent “rug” — a beautiful, distinctive detail that is built into the tile. In a floral pattern of blue, white and gold, it is a visually stunning design element that sets the look for the whole room. Unlike fabric rugs, it is elegant, polished and easy to keep clean. Electric in-floor heat is a luxurious addition.
The owners love their home’s location and the updates they have made to their “not-so-empty” nest. They have completed their remodeling visions for now, but haven’t ruled out future updates. “Your crew is great,” said the owner. “Very good workers, very timely and very considerate.”
