Elevated Restoration
Condo, Minneapolis
After maintenance on the building’s HVAC system caused extensive water damage in their condo unit, the owners turned to Plekkenpol Builders to help restore their home.
Carpet, wood flooring, walls, cabinetry and furniture were ruined. Almost the entire unit needed to be gutted and rebuilt.
While restoration was the primary goal, the project provided the homeowners with the opportunity to make improvements and design updates they had been contemplating for a while.
During the remodel, the owners retained a few favorite elements from their original kitchen, such as the raised, fluted marble-look backsplash tile.
The cabinets were updated for a more contemporary look, pairing rich wood lower cabinets with light gray upper cabinets.
Designing the new island became an opportunity to innovate. The deep-blue Silestone quartz countertop has waterfall edges and matte porcelain tiles in a Mid-Century-inspired design. The interior features custom storage.
“We like to bring in uniqueness via textures, wallpapers, backsplashes, cabinet pulls/knobs, etc.,” said the
owner. “We don’t want things to look like every kitchen in every magazine.”
A new coffee bar/pantry maximizes both storage and functionality.
To accommodate its addition adjacent to the kitchen, two office doors were relocated.
Other remodeled spaces include the laundry room, two offices and the primary suite.
Even the concrete subfloor required repair after it was damaged by chemicals, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the amazing view from the sixth floor.
“We’re aiming for a balance of warmth with modern, clean lines,” said the owner. “We want to walk in and feel a sense of calm — and for others to feel like they can be comfy and themselves.”
