The ribbon is cut! Despite some setbacks and delays due to the pandemic, seven Minneapolis apartment units are ready to become safe, stable housing where mothers can live with their children as they go through recovery at Avivo, a nonprofit that specializes in addiction treatment and recovery.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 22 included speakers, media coverage and tours of the completed units, two of which were remodeled by Plekkenpol Builders. One of the speakers, a young woman who is moving into a unit with her 18-day-old baby, was especially grateful for the fresh start.
The apartments were all converted to better suit the women who will be living in them, with additional bedrooms and more functional spaces for families. In one unit, Plekkenpol Builders added a half-wall in one of the larger bedrooms to create two smaller bedrooms, one for each of the kids.
We were able to fully complete the units with the help and generosity and our partners including suppliers, vendors and designers. These renovated units will allow families to achieve wellness together, while living in dignified housing. The first families have already moved in!

Plekkenpol Builders, together with Housing First Minnesota Foundation, is renovating two South Minneapolis apartment units for AVIVO, a nonprofit that specializes in addiction treatment and recovery.
This facility houses women along with their children as they seek services for substance addiction. Safe housing is critical for mothers to focus on recovery, go back to school and find employment.
The projects will include everything from plumbing and electrical to cabinets, countertops and appliances. Project Manager Pam Velander said, “I believe this will give them the tools and work to achieve their goals of a better life.”
The two units are scheduled to be finished by this summer.
