Lower Level Retreat
The family of six loved to open their home to friends and family. Their goal was to transform their unfinished basement into a comfortable space for overnight guests, especially the owner’s mother who liked to stay for extended visits.

Lower Level, Bloomington
To ensure her comfort, the fully finished guest suite is accessible on one level and includes a family/game room, full kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and laundry.

Prior to remodeling, the basement was primarily used as storage for kids’ toys, sporting goods, seasonal items,
etc.

The family room became the natural starting point when remodeling. Its custom-cut white stone feels both rustic and contemporary and sets the tone for the entire space.

The full kitchen was added with the owner’s mother in mind. It is fully equipped with everything the avid cook might need including custom storage, gourmet appliances and marble-inspired quartz countertops. The ceiling is maple laid in a herringbone pattern.

On the game room side, bar seating and a beverage bar create the perfect setting for entertaining.

“Thank you for all the work you did in finishing our basement,” said the owners. “Words cannot express how much we love it, and we still find it hard to believe it is just down the steps!”
Comfort and convenience were key when designing the bedroom suite. The bathroom and washer/dryer are easily accessed through an adjoining door.

For maximum luxury, the bathroom flooring is porcelain tile with electric in-floor heat. The wall tile is a unique combination of two tiles, alternating matte and shiny, laid vertically to make the space feel taller. Below-cabinet lighting is useful when navigating in the dark.

What was once an unfinished basement is now a luxurious retreat for guests that the family also enjoys.

“The entire crew was efficient, professional, friendly and good at what they do,” said the owners. “You can tell they love their job. We could not be more pleased, from start to finish. We look forward to using Plekkenpol Builders in the future.”
